Made in Cupertino

Yesterday, Steve Jobs unveiled his plans to build a new iconic Apple HQ in Cupertino to house 12,000 employees. The circular building, like many Apple stores, is deceivingly simple-looking, but will not have one piece of exterior glass that is straight. The plan also calls for auditoriums to give Apple keynote lectures and underground parking to allow for a massive amount of landscaping to fill the rest of the lot.

Roman Bridge is Falling Down

To demonstrate the lightweight construction of a new 14 story communal building atop a bridge in Rome, OFL architecture recreated the structure by amending a box of Barilla. Perhaps through molded pulp or lasers or magic we can recreate this technique with one of our designs to create a collapsable piece of packaging.

Yes, the used box of pasta is more interesting than the building.

Someone has time and glue on their hands.

Conrad Garvey had this one to share. Stan Munro is racing towards a March 2010 deadline to complete his toothpick city which will contain a record-breaking 50 buildings at 1:164 scale. Check out the other images on his website. The amount of detail is to the point where you can make out facial expressions on the sculptures at St. Peters Cathedral.

LEGO House

Every designer's childhood dream has come true — a full-scale house made of LEGO bricks. British television presenter, James May, and a group of volunteers are currently erecting the 2-story home in Dorking, UK. Overall, the structure will be comprised of over 816,000,000 LEGO pieces.

Ole McDonald had a Vertical Superstructure

Dubai's outrageous growth has spurred outrageous solutions to its agricultural problems. Within a location lacking fresh water, decent transportation, or nutrient rich soil; will soon rise vertical farms that will use sea water to cool and humidify greenhouses and convert humidity into fresh water for crops. The Italian architectural firm, studiomobile, created the concept.

Some Books You'll Get Into

Kansas City, Missouri is an oddly interesting Midwestern city for design much like Cincinnati, Ohio and Columbus, Indiana are for architecture. Local citizens were asked to nominate books that most appropriately represented the city. The spines of the chosen books' covers were recreated as an architectural feature to mask the parking garage at the public library.

Jay Shafer of Tumbleweed Tiny House Company designs and builds homes that are both astonishingly small and surprisingly beautiful. Most are under or around 100 square feet; with the smallest at only 65 sq ft. He'll be holding workshops here in San Francisco on the 19th and 20th of this month, as part of a West Coast tour to introduce his idea of sustainable housing to the world at large.
