It was one year ago today that Sarah walked into 831 Montgomery St. as a full-time employee; and hence; brought us one step further to true workplace diversity past hiring a homosexual; and a Chinese woman with Allodoxaphobia. We would all like to thank Sarah for a solid year of drowning us in ale; and burning the candle at both ends.

LEGO's 50th Anniversary

If you have checked the Google homepage today, then you have seen the homage to LEGO. The word "LEGO" derives from the Danish words "leg godt" meaning "play well". Incidentally, "LEGO" also means "I put together". The bricks were actually invented by the British Hilary Fisher Page. Page committed suicide over business troubles and LEGO bought the patent.

Strange fact: LEGO produces about 306 million tiny rubber tires every year. That is more than any tire manufacturer in the world.

Self-proclaimed "brick artist", Nathan Sawaya, has made some pretty cool sculptures with the toys.

LA LIVE'n

Inspired by the trip to LA last week for Coke's LA LIVE project, I thought I would post some renderings of recent construction in the downtown area. LA's downtown is sprouting a lot of residential hi-rises. Gehry is looking to extend his imprint past the Disney Concert Hall to a large residential complex across the street.

Whatever your take is on Gehry's architecture, it's nice to see that LA is making an attempt at architectural integrity.

Coke people may also want to look at this as a study in form and texture and color as a reflection of LA culture. Current Miami and Dubai projects are also worth taking a look.

Smoking Jacket

Fiona Carswell's jacket allow the wearer to politely exhale their cigarette smoke into a chamber within the jacket instead of upon unsuspecting pedestrians behind them. The tube within the jacket feeds the smoke to lung-like chambers in the front of the jacket. After a while, the lungs darken to reflect the biological effects of smoking.
