Helen Friel, a London-based paper engineer, has created these crisp paper models of Oliver Byrne's Euclid's Elements.

DESIGNS OF THE YEAR 2012

The Design Museum has announced the projects nominated for the Designs of the Year 2013. Last years winner was The Olympic Torch by BarberOsgerby, see more details of last years winners and exhibition here. This year my vote goes to Thomas Heatherwick, for his beautiful and unique olympic torch, but will they have olympic torches winning on two consecutive years? I also think 'The Shard' by Renzo Piano is another strong contender. In my opinion, a beautiful building and such a huge project! Sometimes, its almost invisible as light is reflected off every side of it. I love this idea! Last year my new years resolution was to take a photo everyday. It was probably the only new years resolution I have ever stuck to! After I completed the year I decided not to continue with it, but I have recently re-started as I missed having a record of what I'd been up to (my memory is terrible.) I find it difficult enough sometimes just to take a photo of a day, so I think this guy has set himself a pretty epic challenge. A lovely project non the less and I will follow with interest.

Invisible Creature is an illustration and print studio created by brothers, Don and Ryan Clark. Their inner-child, slightly vintage style is most seen inside Target stores. They combined their passion for cartoons with their obsession with Legos for an awesome holiday gift package.

Qualy design have been around for a while, however their new spice containers have made people take a bit more notice. They mostly design household things but with a bit more of a sense of humour.

Starbucks sells $1 reusable cup

Starting this week, Starbucks is offering its North American customers a $1 reusable plastic cup in an effort to reduce the number of discarded paper cups and plastic lids. All company-owned stores and some licensed stores in the U.S. and Canada will offer the cups, which resemble the white paper cups normally used.

The cups are marked to help employees fill the three serving sizes. Customers who use the cup or any other reusable container get a 10-cent discount for each refill as well as a boiling water cleanse for the cup.

Starbucks tested the cup in 600 Pacific Northwest stores starting in October and found a 26% boost in reusable cup usage compared to the same month in 2011 November. The trend enjoyed a 55% increase over the last three years at Starbucks, according to the company. Reusable cups were used more than 34 million times in 2011.

But that makes up just 2% of Starbucks’ worldwide beverage sales. The company aims to raise that figure to 5% by 2015 – down from its original goal of 25%.

The $1 cup price and 10¢ discount are good incentives, but will people swap connivence for environmental action? Also, will the time it takes to wash out your cup slow the production line baristas? If anyone has the ability to change our coffee culture behavior it's Starbucks.

Keep Calm and Get a Good Lawyer/Barrister

Barter Books in Alnwick railway station is a beloved institution in the north of England, with an extraordinary extra claim to fame.

Its owners Stuart and Mary Manley began events which have led to a tide of variants on the slogan 'Keep Calm and Carry On' prepared in 1939 by the wartime Government in case of German invasion but never used.

The article discusses the legal wrangling over the use of the design and offers a lovely mini-doc (at the bottom) about Barter Books and the poster's discovery.
